Field: The Game & Equipt

The Game

Team size ranges for 16 – 23 players. Don’t worry 2 full games per weekend plus 1 practice, ask the guys you know there is always lots of field time if the game is being played right.

The game is played on a soccer field or football size field for all level Novice to Midget.  The game is broken into four 12 minute quarters for N & PW.  Bantam & Midget play 15 minute quarter.

There are lots of rules that the players need to learn because unlike box cross checking is illegal, there are restraining line to restrict player movement & there is full body checking shoulder to chest.

The game is a running game that requires good ball handling skill, conditioning & speed.  Although if you are a defender your 6’ long pole can overcome a slight speed difference.

Goalies are usually some of the best players on the team, wearing limited equipment to guard a 6’ x 6’ net… but they also are responsible for captaining the defense & starting the offence one our defense gets the ball.

So a team is made up of 10 players on the field at all times, unless there is a penalty

3 attack, they are primarily offensive players, their job is to score goals, but also see if they can get the ball back if we lose it in the opposing zone.

3 Middies, their job is to play both ways, set up plays, score goals & stop the other team from scoring.  They are the only players that can run the full field without restrictions.

3 Long Poles, defensive specialists that carry a 6” long pole to shut down the other team & start our offense moving

1 Goalie, critical to call our defensive, sets & call out where the ball is at all times to his defense partners.

Note, any one of the attack or Long poles or goalie can run the entire field as long as one of his team mates stays onside (behind the restraining line).

The program starts usually as soon as we get confirmation of 1st practice times, usually Mid to late March & goes until the end of May.

Location of practices is the turf fields at Iceland arena wed. nights 5:30 – 7:00, dress warm, it is cold & wet in March & April/

Equipment

Equipment required, same as box, but under armor & or turtle necks & track pants are recommended for early season practice.  Even wet gear.
